Once you've successfully connected your data source(s) to Luzmo, it's time to bring in your first dataset(s) from the desired data source(s). We highly recommend only adding a specific dataset once to your Luzmo organization, and then making it accessible to everyone who should be able to query it.

Optimizing your first dataset(s)

After adding your dataset(s), it's important to optimize them for further consumption within the dashboard editor. This means that you should ensure that e.g. your column names are meaningful, your default slot format for the different columns are configured as desired, etc.

Sharing your dataset(s)

Once you've added your first dataset(s) and optimized them for ease-of-use, you can start sharing the dataset(s) with the necessary internal users and/or groups. This will ensure that the necessary colleagues can make appropriately and consistently use and maintain your dataset(s), avoiding duplicate dataset(s) being added by different users with access to your data source.

  • For the "Developers" group, we recommend sharing the dataset(s) with "owner" access to allow them to completely manage them (i.e. view, edit, share, and delete the dataset(s)).
Note that they require equal or higher access to the dataset(s) as you'd like to provide to your application's users via Luzmo's Authorization token mechanism.
  • The "Designer" group could benefit from "can use" access to allow them to use the dataset(s) in new or existing dashboard, or "can edit" if you'd like to allow them to also make changes to the dataset (e.g. add derived columns, rename columns, etc.).
  • The "Viewer" group could receive "Can view" access in case they should only be able to query the dataset(s) within the context of the dashboard widget(s) referencing them. You might want to provide them "can use" access in case they should be able to configure Alerts in the dashboard widget(s) you shared with them.

When publicly sharing a dashboard you will see a toggle to enable publicly sharing the datasets used as well.

If a dataset is publicly shared you will see the an Earth globe icon next to its name in the datasets overview page, a "Via shareable link" in the sharing modal and a message indicating "This dataset can be used in dashboards with a public link. Revoke" in the dataset's information page.

Adding filters to limit dataset access

It might be interesting to apply filters on the dataset access to limit your internal designer's access to only a subset of your source data. Some example use-cases:

  • You could filter your multi-tenant dataset(s) to only expose rich dummy data rows to your dashboard designers, who can use it to build meaningful dashboards without exposing real customer data.
  • Instead of querying all data, you could apply a static filter to limit the queries to only a subset of the data (e.g. only data of the last X years instead of all historical data). These filters will only be applied when those users are querying the dataset (e.g. via a dashboard).

Adding your dataset(s) to Collection(s)

After adding the dataset(s) and making it accessible to the desired users, you can also add them to one or more Collection(s) as a way to group related datasets together. If there are users with access to the Collection but not yet to the dataset(s) you add to that Collection, our platform will inform you about this and allows you to also share the dataset(s) with those users and/or groups.

Now that we have our data available in Luzmo in a suitable manner, we can start building visual insights in Luzmo's dashboard editor! The following article will provide some interesting recommendations on building and sharing dashboards.
