Thinking about visualizing hierarchies without using a traditional chart? Then we have the perfect solution for you: our amazing circle pack chart!
The circle pack chart is used for showing different levels of a hierarchy, using circles as the name already predicts. Each circle contains a set of smaller circles ‘packed’ inside of the larger circle, representing the sublevels below. The circles of the same level are illustrated in the same color, and the size of the circles are in proportion to the whole.
The different parts can be analyzed by zooming in on the circles and really drill down in the data. This gives a clearer view on the sublevels beneath the bigger circles and their proportions to one another.
The circle pack chart is located in the ‘hierarchical charts’ section and has two data slots: measure and levels.
As mentioned above, the circle pack chart is used for the visualization of hierarchies. You put the different levels of the hierarchy in the levels slot. You can add as many as you like, that is why Levels is in plural. The more levels you add, the more circles you obtain.
In order to control the size of the circles, the measure slot can be used.
The circle pack chart has its secrets. You can discover them by zooming in on the different parts of it or you can choose to filter your dashboard by clicking on one of the parts.
With a little magic, it is also possible to easily change the levels of the hierarchy. You don’t need to remake the whole chart, you just need to change the order of the levels.
There are other dynamic charts for visualizing a hierarchy, like our treemap and sunburst chart.
